Starting out

When you’re first starting out, it’s important to:

Build up your network of contacts – it’s important to speak and learn from others in the sector.  Building up a network of connections that can help you with future career moves and development.

Know what makes you stand out – what area of fire and security would you like to specialise in? What is your experience in this area? Think about the skills and training required and what you can bring to the table.

Get accredited – registering and achieving accreditation with organisations such as NSI, FIA, and Nacoss shows you not only offer high-quality services, but you also adhere to the highest of industry standards and regulations.

Working with a specialist recruitment agency – working with specialists in the sector you are looking to enter or developing your career within is key.  They know about the industry, and they know precisely what skills and experience companies are looking for.  At Secure and Recruit, we can be that perfect agency for you.

Training, experience, and the all-important qualifications

Roles within the fire and security sector, as previously mentioned, are specialist, and often to avoid the development of a skills gap, apprenticeships are often the preferred choice of entry into the sector.

Providing candidates with the right and the necessary skills, as well as hands-on experience through on-the-job training, is a win-win solution for all involved.

Some nationally recognised qualifications in the sector include:

UK fire and security roles

Some of the most popular roles within the fire and security industry include:

Install engineer – this role involves installing security systems such as intruder alarms, CCTV systems, fire and smoke detectors, replacing broken systems, and more.

Fire alarm engineer – skills required in this position will focus on fire alarm installation, replacement, and repairs, as well as emergency lighting systems.

Fire extinguisher engineer – required skills and qualifications for this role are usually in the form of BAFE or IFEDA.
