Don’t Add Overused Words

When it comes to your CV summary and the words that are used throughout the text, try to avoid cliches. Words like “hardworking” and “passionate” are overused in CVs. It will make it look like you put no time or effort into your CV and application, which isn’t the case at all. Although there are many similarities between the experience and qualifications that are highlighted in fire and security job applications, try to make yourself stand out. Look for ways to phrase your experience in a unique manner while still incorporating the keywords that are expected within the industry.

Avoid a Cluttered CV

Although you might think it looks great to use a unique format and add dozens of sections to your CV, less is generally more in this area. Don’t work on making your CV stand out, and instead, focus on the content of your CV standing out from the crowd. A simple and clear CV looks much more professional to recruiters, and they’ll find it easier to understand what makes you stand out from the crowd. While you might think being original would help you to secure a job in the fire and security industry, this isn’t something that’s particularly important. It’s only when you are applying for creative roles that this might matter, but even then, we recommend focusing on the quality of your content.

Never Copy and Paste Your CV

While you are probably desperate to land a new job, never copy and paste your CV out to each company. Make sure you take the time to tailor your CV to each fire and security job role you are applying for. We would actually recommend applying for fewer jobs if you don’t have the time to do this, as it will help to increase your success rate. Our team knows how much time and effort this can take, but we promise it will be worth it in the end. You don’t have to completely rewrite your CV each time, but focus on updating your summary and job description to match what each company is looking for. A recruiter will be able to tell when you’ve spent the time and effort learning about their company, and you’ll be rewarded with interviews in no time at all.

Craft the Perfect CV Summary

The first thing that a recruiter will read when your CV lands on their desk or in their email file is your CV summary. If this is full of spelling mistakes or is irrelevant to the job role, you’ll be rejected straight away. The summary is one of the most important parts of your CV, so don’t rush to write this. Look online for examples of CV summaries to get you inspired, but make sure you write something original which suits your personality. In just a few sentences, someone should learn about your strengths, goals, and achievements within the industry so far in your career.

Don’t Be Scared to Show Off

It’s in our nature in the UK to try and be modest about our achievements. However, if you’ve been successful in your workplace, this is something to be proud of. Never forget this when updating your CV, and don’t be shy about sharing your achievements with the world. We highly recommend that you share examples of the changes you made in your previous jobs as well as any awards you have received. Don’t undersell yourself when you know you are truly qualified for the role. It’s so easy to shy away from adding everything you’ve achieved, but you know how much hard work and effort it took to get there. It’s only going to impress a recruiter, but make sure you are always honest about your experiences.

Standing out to recruiters is one of the toughest parts of applying for jobs. By following these tips listed above, you’ll start securing interviews for fire and security job roles in no time at all.
